Au Canada: a documentary journey

This fall, La cinémathèque du documentaire à la Bpi explores the immensity of the Canadian territory through an ambitious program of 65 films from September 7 to November 17 that echoes eras, territories, cultures and communities. How to inhabit a place? How to make society? How to transmit? It is by bringing together the emblematic figures of direct cinema with an equally innovative new generation, irrigated by Aboriginal filmmakers, that the cycle attempts to answer these questions.

Daniela de Felice, Matthieu Chatellier: on both sides

Dialogue and transmission are also at the heart of a short cycle from November 18 to December 4 dedicated to Daniela de Felice and Matthieu Chatellier, who work together while cultivating their subjectivity. From intimate history against a backdrop of Italian politics to artistic creation as a line of life and love.

Regular meetings and special sessions

The season offers several portraits of artists: the trumpeter Chet Baker and the saxophonist Archie Shepp in a session of the cycle Du court Toujours who speaks the language of swing, the writer Édouard Louis and his transformation on the program of the Rencontres d’Images documentaires, the filmmaker Jane Campion filmed by another filmmaker, Julie Bertuccelli, for a preview evening proposed by ARTE, or the photographer André Kertész seen by the artist Teri Wehn Damisch, who received the Charles Brabant 2022 prize awarded by the Scam on this occasion.

Other artists are present, on stage this time, for conferences and master classes. On the occasion of their 3rd season, the cine-conferences, in partnership with the EHESS, invite directors Olivier Zabat, Christophe Boltanski, Valérie Jouve and Ariane Michel. The master class of the master 2 DEMC of the University Denis Diderot opens to a duo of filmmakers, Marie-Violaine Brincard and Olivier Dury. And Sergueï Loznitsa comes to present a 2nd master class, after that on sound, devoted this time to editing, on the occasion of the broadcast of Mr Landsbergis in partnership with Les Rencontres du Cinéma Documentaire de Périphérie. As for the meetings of the Permanent University of the City of Paris, they invite us to (re)discover the animated documentary in the company of Jacques Kermabon.

This season is also one of novelties and experiments, combining cinema in the past and the present but always with the strength of the commitment of those who make it. This is how the Trésors du doc cycle takes on a
hybrid to pay tribute to Jean Rouch with sessions combining readings and screenings; that La fabrique des films splits: on the work-in-progress side, Aminatou Echard comes to talk about her film in progress, a questioning about her legacy ; on the classic side, magicians from the CNC’s heritage department will comment on the restoration of La Croisière jaune, before its preview; and that Les yeux doc à midi open to the librarians of Ile-de-France who come to share their favorite films.

Finally, it is with great satisfaction that we are inaugurating this season a new event in partnership with Les Cinémas du Centre Pompidou and les Ateliers Médicis: the Ideal Cinémathèque for the suburbs of the world. And we also have the pleasure of celebrating the thirty years of Addoc, the association of documentary filmmakers, which has been dedicated since 1992 to the defense of creative documentaries.

In Canada… and elsewhere, the documentary journey has only just begun.
