The work of the Bpi
Development and maintenance in 2022, renovation in 2024-2028
With 1.4 million visitors per year, the spaces of the Public Information Library, which have not seen any work since the site was carried out in 1998-2000, are in dire need of renovation. An ambitious program of works was planned from autumn 2021, making it possible both to improve the conditions for welcoming the public, to promote the diversification of audiences and uses and to reorganize the spaces around the priority themes of the project of establishment (Artistic and cultural education, digital mediation, lifelong learning, press and publishing news, documentary cinema, etc.).
However, during the year 2021, it was decided to postpone this work to the period of closure of the Centre Pompidou (2024 – 2028) during which a major renovation and upgrading project of the Center will be carried out.
On June 16, 2021, a first step was taken, with the return of the Bpi public through the common entrance on the piazza and access to the library from level 2 via the outside escalator, the “caterpillar”.
In the short term, and without waiting for the future Bpi renovation project planned during the closure of the Center Pompidou, limited work on an occupied site will be carried out in 2022 under the supervision of an architect in order to adapt the layout of the spaces. to this new access and to intervene on elements requiring urgent maintenance interventions: floors and toilets.
